The Department of Biological Sciences is a multidimensional academic unit comprising diverse areas of biology, including zoology, botany, and microbiology. The scientific research of the members of the department mainly focuses on two main areas, namely, medicinal plant extracts and sustainable agriculture.

The staff members have nation and international partnerships with botanical and medical research institutes. Our research focuses on the production of phytochemicals from wild plants in the Al-Ahsa Oasis for use as an antifungal biological agent and for pharmacological treatment of chronic bone diseases.

The department is also distinguished by its work on the production of the green synthesis of silver nanoparticles by plant extracts, which are used with high efficiency as anti-bacterial and anti-fungal, to increase the efficiency of plant growth and to treat cancerous tumors.

The department is also working on developing highly efficient nitrogen fixing bio-fertilizers in agriculture and using algae extracts as bio-fertilizers in agriculture and as anti-microbial agents.

We have a research team specialized in providing many biochemical analysis for food and drug companies, including isolating different types of bacteria and fungi from biological environments, estimating the bacterial load in dairy and food products using modern technologies, and assessing the toxicity of harmful environmental pollutants on plants and animals.
