1. DEPARTMENT
BIOMEDICAL SCIENCES
2. NAME OF PROGRAM:
MASTER OF SCIENCE PROGRAM IN BIOCHEMISTRY AND MOLECULAR BIOLOGY.
3. SUMMARY.
a) Aim and Rationale:
The MSc program is designed to prepare students to undertake independent research, hold academic positions in biochemistry and molecular biology departments as well as work in medical laboratories and industry.
b) Objectives
After completing the program the candidate will be able to:
i. Teach biochemistry and molecular biology at an undergraduate level
ii. Conduct independent innovative research, which may contribute towards resolving community medical problems
iii. Train undergraduate and fresh postgraduate students in the latest biochemistry and molecular biology techniques
iv. Act as specialists in the fields of biochemistry and molecular biology in hospital laboratories
v. Effectively communicate scientific information to other scientists
This program is research based and puts emphasis on independent research carried out by a student, supplemented with courses to expand the student's knowledge in medical biochemistry and molecular biology. Over the past years the Division of Biochemistry in the Department of Biomedical Sciences has carried out research projects within the department and in collaboration with other divisions within the medical school. Some of these research projects were interdisciplinary and dealt with medical issues such as hemoglobinopathies, diabetes and the genetics of these diseases.
The Program is conducted at the Department of Biomedical Sciences, College of Medicine of King Faisal University. This Department is equipped with various basic and specialized labs, for students teaching and research work. Students work under the supervision of highly skilled faculty and there is continuous guidance regarding academics and research.
