There is a huge unmet oral healthcare needs in the Saudi population in general, and specifically in Al Ahsa region. While the global recommendation is one dentist per 1700 inhabitants, the current ratio in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is one dentist for every 7,690 individual. The number of Saudi dentists in this region is limited and most of the dental clinics are reliant on expatriate dentists. Socio-culturally, it would be advantageous that Saudi dentists provide oral health care to local population. More number of Saudi dentists will also improve the Dentist: Population ratio favorably.

The student population in this region has increasing aspirations to obtain a professional qualification to earn a respectable living, either through government jobs or private practice. Dentistry is one such profession that many of them are seeking.
