About KFUID

At King Faisal University (KFU), innovation is not just a priority—it is a practice rooted in excellence, entrepreneurship, and national transformation. The university’s pioneering leadership in innovation is best exemplified by its remarkable performance in intellectual property generation. In 2024, KFU ranked first in the world for the number of patents registered with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO), recording a total of 691 patents. This achievement stands as a clear testament to the university’s robust innovation ecosystem and its commitment to translational research that bridges theory with impact.

The King Faisal University Innovation District (KFUID) represents a strategic embodiment of KFU’s innovation vision. The acronym KFUID reflects the district’s core values and operational ethos:
  • K – Keeping up Excellence
  • F – Fostering Innovation
  • U – Unifying Practices
  • I – Inspiring Others
  • D – Delivering Innovative Products
Spanning a purpose-designed area within KFU’s main campus in Al-Ahsa, Saudi Arabia, KFUID is a dynamic ecosystem that integrates academic excellence with applied research, entrepreneurship, and industry collaboration. The district is home to over 48 million square meters of innovation-dedicated infrastructure, with expansion plans aimed at reaching 50 million square meters to accommodate future growth and diversification.

KFUID’s advanced infrastructure includes:
  1. Modern co-working spaces and startup offices
  2. Dedicated research centers, research and central laboratories aligned with academic departments
  3. Innovation studios, digital workspaces, and ideation zones
  4. Multi-purpose training halls for workshops, hackathons, and collaborative events
  5. Exhibition and demo areas for showcasing student and faculty innovations
  6. A central plaza with residential units that bridge research, business, and learning hubs
At the core of KFUID lies the Innovation, Knowledge Transfer, and Entrepreneurship Center, which plays a pivotal role in the regional and national innovation landscape. This flagship center houses:
  • Four specialized incubators tailored to support early-stage startups
  • A growing portfolio of 64 active startups operating across multiple sectors
  • A vibrant calendar of ideation labs, pitch competitions, hackathons, and business accelerators
The Center operates as a strategic catalyst that transforms research outputs into real-world applications, supports entrepreneurial talent, and enables KFU’s students and faculty to become competitive contributors to local and global innovation markets. In addition, it strengthens the university’s capacity for knowledge transfer, intellectual property protection, and industry-academia partnerships.

KFUID also hosts four corporate entities operating in diverse sectors (Veterinary, Media, Information technology, Agriculture), further enriching the district’s innovation ecosystem and fostering cross-sector collaboration between academia and industry.

KFUID’s infrastructure is not only digitally empowered and future-ready—it is also aligned with sustainable development goals and Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030. The district aspires to serve as a regional model for academic innovation ecosystems, demonstrating how higher education institutions can lead in innovation, economic impact, and global collaboration.
